Was last night versus the Braves at PNC Park. Great starting pitching. Great defense (and even a great play by Doumit in right field). Timely hitting. And unbelieveable emotion for a game that mattered so much more to the opposition.
If there is any reason for optimism for what the Pirates can be, this was it. I was stunned to see the fist pumping, both on the field and on the bases, and the emotion on the bench.

Fell into a couple of tickets from a family member of a Buffalo Bills season ticket holder and am going to the game in late November. Are there any Steeler places to go in Buffalo? My tickets are in the 29th row at the 45. For my first opportunity to see the Steelers live at 41, I couldn't have done better if I had tried.

Figured Id start a thread to help (and get help) making those difficult fantasy start decisions (outside leagues)...

For example, week one:

I'm rolling with Steve Smith and Ochocinco as my starting WR's (both of which I hate but were auto-drafted for me when my PC locked up during the draft). I have Mike Wallace on the bench and Ronnie Brown as my RB/WR flex.

My heart tells me to play Wallace (despite the DD start), at one of those positions but the ESPN "projections" support my current lineup...

I usually teeter weekly on situational starts (which Im sure a lot of yinz do to).

It would be nice to have some additional influence and outside influence to help or be helped with the tough decisions!

Peter Diana / Post-Gazette file
Rashard Mendenhall -- Three fumbles last season

So Dennis Dixon will get the start at quarterback Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Falcons. It's not the right call by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, not the right call at all. Charlie Batch is the better option because of his experience. He knows the offense inside out and sees the field better than Dixon. He isn't likely to make the killer mistakes that gets his team beat. He would give the Steelers their best chance of winning.

Tomlin said something else troubling Monday when he announced Dixon was his man. He said Dixon would have use of the "whole playbook," unlike last season in Baltimore when he made his only NFL start against the Ravens and ran a pared-down version of the offense in a 20-17 overtime loss. I'm not sure Dixon is ready for that. I'd feel a whole lot better about him if I knew a lot of the play calls involved him turning around and handing the ball to No. 34.

You know, Rashard Mendenhall.

I'm thinking he has to have a monster game Sunday for the Steelers to win.

He needs to have a monster season, actually.

Mendenhall proved he's capable in the final 13 games last season after being benched on offense in a Sept. 27 game at Cincinnati and publicly lashed by Tomlin for not being up to speed with the game plan. A lot of players would have sulked. Mendenhall reacted exactly the way Tomlin had hoped. That was good coaching by him. Mendenhall studied hard and played harder the rest of the way. He finished the season with 1,108 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, making veteran running back Willie Parker expendable.

Now, Mendenhall clearly is the guy, which is a good thing. He's a big-time back, if you ask me. I hear people say he has fumbling problems, but that's nonsense. He touched the ball 242 times last season as a runner and 25 more as a pass receiver and fumbled it three times. He can play on my team any day.

"I am not a fumbler," Mendenhall said. "I think when I do fumble, it gets magnified by the way I carry the ball. But fumbling has never been an issue with me. All of my coaches through high school and college and here know that."

It's fair to argue Mendenhall has reached a point with the Steelers that he's right there with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, defensive end Aaron Smith and safety Troy Polamalu as players the team absolutely can't afford to lose to injury. Behind him are third-down specialist Mewelde Moore and two players who have yet to carry the ball in an NFL game, Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer.

For the Steelers' sake, as well as Mendenhall's, knock on wood that Mendenhall stays healthy.

Not that the man is worried about getting hurt.

Turns out he's a nut about eating right and doing acupuncture.

"Last year was my first year doing it," Mendenhall said of the acupuncture treatments. "[Teammate] James Farrior got me into it. I probably do it every other week and do chiropractic work the other week."

Hey, if it gets Mendenhall 300-plus carries this season ...

"It's nothing new for me," he said of carrying a full load, including work as the Steelers' third-down back. "It's been that way my whole life, all through high school and college. It's just on a bigger stage here."

Just in case, Tomlin made it a point to save Mendenhall during the exhibition season, giving him just five, eight, five and five carries in the four games. It's hard for any back to put up big numbers when being used like that and Mendenhall didn't. He had just one double-digit run, an 11-yarder against the Denver Broncos.

No worries.

"The preseason isn't about yards," Mendenhall said. "It's about reads, decision-making, picking up blitzes, blocking, explosion through the hole. The coaches are looking at those things to see if you're ready."

And the verdict on Mendenhall?

"I'm ready. I'm all good."

That's a comforting thought for Sunday, especially with Dixon getting the start.

If Mendenhall doesn't get 25-30 touches, I'll be surprised.

And the Steelers probably won't win.

Some notes from Tomlin Tuesday

Mike Tomlin said today that Isaac Redman will serve as the Steelers' short-yardage back. That's bad news for those of you who selected Mendenhall in your fantasy drafts.

On the plus side, Tomlin did say the Steelers will use Mendenhall as the primary third-down back - as they did in the second half of last season - so he could make up for a couple of the scores that Redman may syphon off.

© As expected, Antwaan Randle El will be the team's emergency QB this week against Atlanta and will get some practice snaps at quarterback.

Randle El is also the backup holder on PATs and field goals.

© Jeff Reed will handle kickoffs this week, but I expect that to be a week-to-week thing with him and Daniel Sepulveda.

© Tomlin would not commit to saying which rookie receiver, Emmanuel Sanders or Antonio Brown - or if both - will be active on game days.

He was also non-commital with rookie linebackers Jason Worilds, Stephenson Sylvester and Thaddeus Gibson.

He wants the kids to earn their spots - though I think both rookie wide receivers and two of the three linebackers will be active.

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday there's no guarantee that Ben Roethlisberger will be the starting quarterback when he returns from his four-game suspension.

AFC North blog
ESPN.com's James Walker writes about all things AFC North in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

On Monday, Tomlin named Dennis Dixon the starter in Roethlisberger's absence.

When asked if Roethlisberger would regain his starting job upon his return, Tomlin told Sirius NFL Radio: "I'm going to dodge that one and not artfully," according to USA Today.

"I'm not going to back myself in a corner."

Byron Leftwich, reacquired by Pittsburgh during an April trade, was expected to start while Roethlisberger was out, but sprained his left medial collateral ligament Thursday against Carolina. Dixon, a third-year player from Oregon, threw for a touchdown and ran for another during an overtime loss in Baltimore last season when Roethlisberger was out with a concussion.

"Dennis has had a very productive preseason and training camp," Tomlin said. "He went into the training camp as a young guy, second in the pecking order behind Byron Leftwich. He did a nice job and made it extremely competitive. He waged a battle and got some first-team reps in some preseason games. Largely, we've been very impressed with how he's handled himself in game situations."

Roethlisberger was not chosen as a Steelers captain in a vote by his teammates announced Monday. He has been selected the previous two seasons. Wide receiver Hines Ward and tight end Heath Miller will be the offensive captains.

I was looking for some info over at Baseball Reference and kind of accidentally came across the offensive numbers by position for the team. Not surprisingly they were pretty terrible at almost every position. Decent numbers in CF (.780 OPS), and surprisingly average-ish numbers from right field (.787). The only other position with an OPS over .700 was 2B (.729). LF has been a let down at .699, 3B down at .686 catchers at .667, and not surprisingly the SS group at .647.

Then there's the most pathetic part. The offensive position that teams tend rely on most heavily, 1B, has been the worst on the team. The 1B group is actually struggling to stay north of .600, hitting .216/.266/.353 (.618). Being below average at 1B is one thing, but having them be outhit by the group of Ronny Cedeno, Bobby Crosby, and Argenis Diaz is another.
