Re: Good Riddance To Bruce Arians. May The Steelers Offensive Finally Shine To It's Potential
Ben and Tomlin are big boys and they will be alright. If it is Fichtner, I have a feeling that things will work out nicely for both of them. Fichtner helped put the spread offense in at Memphis and me personally, i like the idea of the Steelers running the ball from a spread offense as well as Ben slinging it. It could really help to utilize all of the weapons we have.

And the minute Finchtner calls 3 pass plays in a row in the 1st quarter people will start *****ing.
Until Art gets it through his head that it's not 1975 anymore it doesn't matter who the OC is.

Re: Good Riddance To Bruce Arians. May The Steelers Offensive Finally Shine To It's Potential
I tend to half agree with your comment, the NFL is currently a passing league and that won't change anytime soon unless new rule are put in place to cause it to change, like they did that caused the change to the passing game.
However I believe Art would be fine IF...we ran the ball more effectively as compared to just more. And IF we were more effective running in the redzone. And of course Art has already said they need to protect Ben better.
So in all actuality BA was not offered a contract because we had a bad performing O line, due to injuries and inable personnel.

Re: Good Riddance To Bruce Arians. May The Steelers Offensive Finally Shine To It's Potential
I can agree with your point here, but I have two issues:
1. Why lie to your fans? The very day that Arians was let go Art was on the radio saying it was 100% Tomlin's decision. It has come out since, and Rooney basically admitted, that it was a Rooney decision and not a Tomlin decision. If you want to make these choices yourself don't pretend someone else is doing it.
2. If you cant trust your head coach to make the best decision for the team why is he your head coach?

I also don't mind running from a spread offense, but that means having a RB lined up in the backfield. How many times (and it's a lot) did Arians telegraph his plays. Tight formation, TE goes in motion, gets to to left tackle and stops. Ball is snapped and Mendy tries to run off the left tackle. Duh!!! Or let's line up with no one in the backfield. Guess what? I'm gonna pass it and the defense now doesn't have to protect against the run, pins their ears back and we have a sack or a hurried pass.
As I've said on a couple of threads, I liked some of the plays that BA designed but overall his philosophy and schemes just plain stunk. Whoever replaces him must change that. If he does, I'm on board (at least to start).

Re: Good Riddance To Bruce Arians. May The Steelers Offensive Finally Shine To It's Potential
do you remember when Arians was talking about putting both Mendenhall and parker in the backfield out of the spread formation? I remember being excited about that because they could both run and catch the ball decently enough and the defense would have had to respect the many options there was between running and throwing the ball. Too bad Arians never took that idea to the field because there was some weapons to take advantage of that formation. Fichtner is infinitely familiar with the spread offense and would no doubt not be afraid to use it. with ben, young money and the group of backs on the roster, the offense could be downright dangerous between the 20's and in the redzone. DeAngelo Williams got rich because of the spread offense, I'd like to see how our backs could prosper out of it.

We do pretty good with 3 wides on the field. That's what the formation should be as their base unit.

Still a better OC than Sherman.
