    Default Alex Dickerson

    9. Alex Dickerson, Pirates: Dickerson had a very solid career offensively at Indiana, though his power numbers went down a bit with the switch to the new college bats in 2011. That, and a lack of a true defensive home, led him to be available in the third round for Pittsburgh. He's settled in nicely at first base and showed his advanced hitting skills during his debut last summer. Dickerson can hit for average and has some legitimate power, maximizing it all with excellent plate discipline. His left-handed bat should allow him to move pretty quickly up the ladder.
Ranked #9 in 1B prospects. Anyone know anymore about him? (JNN, Where are ya son?) Was nice to see we have someone to watch at 1B

What about Alex Dickerson? is what I say after reading that thread title

I'll be curious to see if Dickerson's power "potential" turns into something more than "potential" or "gap power". He's got the gap power..

Waiting to see JNN's word and also what his thoughts are on Dickeron's defense at 1B

I have seen him play a few times as a Hoosier and I gotta say that I believe he has a real good shot at some point to being an everyday first sacker at PNC.........don't tell Benny I said that as he likes Matt Curry

Don't worry guys, I saw the bat signal in the sky and found this thread. If you go back to the draft day thread here I actually threw out Dickerson as a potential pick in round 2, thinking Josh Bell wasn't a legitimate possibility. He's a fairly advanced hitter with a decent eye and I think there's some now power with potential for a little more. He could move fairly quickly. Don't think he'll hit for huge average, but he'll hit enough and put up a decent OBP. Probably not a first division 1B, but he could be a decent middle of the crop guy.

Can't really say anything about his defense at 1B. I assume he's still a work in progress I saw him play for Indiana a bunch, but he was playing outfield. That was kind of a nightmare. I saw him at State College twice, but he DHed one of those games. Nothing stood out in the other.

I was a bit surprised to see him on the list there, but then I thought about it and there really aren't any good first base prospects right now. The position is down in the minors. There's Rizzo and Alonso (and I don't see either as stars), then a bunch of question marks. Dickerson actually fits right in there.

I was curious about his 1B defense knowing he had moved there. Was curious how he looked for a guy learning a new position basically.

What do you think his max power potential is? about a 25 HR guy?

I would say 20-25 hr/year with potential to grow.

25 is reasonable. He has a really nice swing, with a sort of natural uppercut to it. Power to all fields as well. At Indiana teams had a tendency to pitch him away, so he really got used to going to left and left center with some authority. As an ultimate best case scenario ceiling I'd want to say higher than that, but I think that's a sort of realistic expectation of what you'd expect him to turn into.

Where will he start out this year. Last year the team made a mistake with Curry, IMO. He should have started out at High A and maybe move up to AA late in year. I hope that is the plan here.

I can't see them putting him at West Virginia. I think Bradenton with a chance to move is your best bet. I'd be pretty disappointed if they sent him to West Virginia (although that would give me a chance to go see him...)
