Haley interviews for Steelers' vacant OC job

By Ralph N. Paulk, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Tuesday, January 31, 2012
    Last updated: 4:56 pm

The Steelers confirmed today they have interviewed former Kansas City head coach Todd Haley for the vacant offensive coordinator position.

Haley, who was fired shortly after the Chiefs dropped a 13-9 decision to the Steelers this past season, appears the leading candidate to replaced Bruce Arians. Arians, whose contract with the Steelers expired, agreed Monday to take over as offensive coordinator with Indianapolis.

Haley`s interview comes a day after the Steelers resigned linebackers coach Keith Butler. Butler had planned to interview today with the Colts.

Haley, 45, had been courted by Arizona and the Jets. Haley led the Chiefs to the AFC West title in 2010, but was let go after the Chiefs struggled to a 5-8 record, partly because of key injuries.

Haley, son of former Steelers director of pro personnel, Dick Haley, had been assistant for 10 years before taking over in Kansas City. He began his coaching career as a wide receiver coach for the Jets before moving on to Chicago, Dallas and Arizona, where he was the Cardinals` offensive coordinator.

The Steelers continued their search for a successor to Arians after former Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell took the quarterbacks coaching position with Baltimore on Monday. Haley could be the likely choice, but the Steelers may also interview several other candidates – including Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements and Steelers quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner.

    Tomlin interviews Todd Haley

By Bob Labriola - Steelers Digest
    Posted 2 hours ago

Coach Mike Tomlin continued his search for an offensive coordinator when he interviewed Todd Haley today at the team’s practice facility.

The Steelers are looking for an offensive coordinator to replace Bruce Arians.

Haley, 45 on Feb. 28, most recently worked in the NFL as the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Hired there in 2009, Haley took the Chiefs to the AFC West title in 2010 but was fired 13 games into the 2011 season with Kansas City at 5-8.

Before being hired in Kansas City, Haley worked as an NFL assistant for four different teams over a 10-year span. He started as a wide receivers coach with the New York Jets in 1999; moved to Chicago to coach the Bears wide receivers in 2001; became the wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator in Dallas in 2004; and then was hired as Arizona’s offensive coordinator in 2007.

Haley is the son of Dick Haley, a Steelers defensive back from 1961-64 who went on to team with Art Rooney Jr. and Bill Nunn to head up the personnel department that built the four-time Super Bowl championship teams of the 1970s.

Steelers Confirm Mike Tomlin is Interviewing Todd Haley Tuesday
by Neal Coolong on Jan 31, 2012 3:34 PM EST

Despite the ramblings of naysayers, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is reportedly interviewing Todd Haley for the team's offensive coordinator position.
The news came on the Steelers own web site, the first story appearing on there referring to the job opening since a story with quotes from Tomlin after former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians' alleged retirement.

To make the issue more compelling, Tribune-Review reporter Mark Kaboly Tweeted Tuesday afternoon that it's "very uncharacteristic" of the Steelers to post such information on its web site. That lends credence to the notion the interview may really only be a formality.

Haley's father, Dick Haley, was Pittsburgh's director of player personnel from 1971-90, making the story a bit more newsworthy for Steelers fans. But Haley's name is a hot one, and judging by the comments from Steelers fans (with Chiefs fans weighing in on the matter), many seem to support the idea of Haley taking over the Steelers offense under Tomlin.

    From Steelers.com:

Ed says Fichtner won't be OC.

I still say Ben won't be here. I expect a draft day trade.

I have a better chance of hitting the Mega Millions/Power Ball than the Steelers pulling off a big draft day trade

Kip, all along I knew this would be a serious consideration for the Steelers. The day Haley was launched by the Chiefs, I wanted the Steelers to ****can Bumble**** Arians and bring this guy aboard.

He did some very nice things with the Cardinals O and, FWIW, came very close to beating us in XLIII. Came as no surprise that the Chiefs tapped him to be HC. IMHO, Fitzgerald hasn't been the same since he left (altho, losing Warner prolly contributed to his last two lackluster seasons in equal measure).

Needless to say, I think Todd Haley could bring a breath of fresh air to the staid Steelers O.

In advance, Crash, I apologize for what is about to be something that sounds very harsh. FWIW, nothing personal, as I think you've brought up what might unfortunately be a plausible, if not all that likely, scenario. At very least, I'll give you credit for putting the ladle in the cauldron on a touchy subject

That said, Ben needs to grow the **** up, goddam it! Goddam him to whatever universal furnace is hottest, because if this causes dissension on the Steelers, it could damage this team for years into the future, whether he stays or not.

**** him if he thinks he's the straw that stirs the Steelers drink. I know it has bothered most of Steeler Nation for years that Ben hasn't gotten the credit we feel he deserves. But, is there more to that than we are willing to admit? Ben is not a media darling and he is rarely mentioned among the elite QBs in the NFL, despite winning two Super Bowls when most QBs struggle to win even one. And, still, Ben is treated like the bastard at a family reunion.

The reality is, if the Steelers were to hire Fictner as OC, it would signal to me that Ben, yet again, pitched a **** fit to the brass and got his ****ing way. This cannot be allowed to happen.

Bottom line is this: Ben needs to shut the **** up, grow the **** up, accept what the Brain Trust believes to be right, get in line and join Bradshaw in the Four Rings Club. ****, John ****ing Elway had to shift gears midway through his career just to get to the winner's circle. If he had to do it, Ben certainly can shift gears for the good of his team AND his legacy.

Is Ben really thinking that being a distraction is the best way to improve his career prospects? He's never had a hard day in his ****ing career from an adulation standpoint. But, he has no business, nor right, to stir the pot the way you're suggesting he will. If he thinks things are bad now, let him get traded and we'll see if he's still ****ing playing two years from now.

The previous post notwithstanding, I don't see the likelihood. What the **** would we get for a QB who is possibly one good hit away from a career ending injury? Not to mention that the very idea that he'd be on the trading block would suggest that he is a malcontent with an ax to grind against the front office. Who the **** would want that, even in the QB desperate NFL?

Ben's going nowhere and he's going to accept his fate here. Besides, who in their right mind would want to assume his contract in the condition he's in?

All that said: where are we going when your ship comes in with the Big Bucks in tow, buddy? I vote for a secluded beach in Costa Rica, with scantily clad women in spaghetti string bikinis and butlers named Sherman fetching us Mai Tais!

I traded him on Madden once. Even the playstation wouldn't give me a first round pick for him.

How much cred does Ed Bouchette lose over this entire thing? He insisted up until a few days ago the Steeler OC would be promoted from within. Because that's the Steeler way and basically Ed was too lazy to consider other possibilities.

Hopefully this works out much better than previous OC's brought in from the outside like Ray Sherman or Kevin Gilbride.

I think all the PG guys have shown how out of touch they are.

Remember Gene Collier's article a few weeks ago about how all the fans are idiots because they overreact to Art Rooney's end of season comments he makes every year?

No chance of that happening. Maybe they will have a draft day trade, it sure as **** won't involve Ben. Hell, they barely have a back-up, which is something I've been complaining about for quite some time!! Read the article in today's PG.

Ben is your QB. Get used to that.
