Perotto to become editor in chief at Baseball Prospectus
From Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus :
Who the heck does our Baseball America top 10 now?As far as our new Editor-in-Chief, luckily the perfect candidate fell into our laps as John Perrotto will be joining BP on a full-time basis. With over two decades of newspaper experience, John brings us new angles on content management, and he'll remain one of our feature writers as well. I've known John personally for years beyond my time here, and I couldn't be happier about this, as he's one of the most dedicated workers I know and I'm sure everyone here will learn much from him. We are excited for John in his new endeavor, and look forward to him meeting the challenges ahead.
Sure as hell hope it's not Dejan. Dejan knows how to get information and interviews, his baseball knowledge has never been impressive at all. After that, we're dry in knowledge here in da Burgh

It doesn't seem like Dejan has the time to keep track of all of the prospects like he would need to, and Perrotto also did BA's Pirate feature story every issue. I doubt Dejan would be the one to take that position. Not sure who would be the one to do it really.

Crap. you saying it makes sense though... unfortunately. You'd think that Top 10's would come from the organization not from beat writers and especially beat writers like we have that are more about breaking news and keeping you updated than having an ounce of talent evaluation in them. DK scares me even more because he judges a players worth based on how nice of a guy they are and if they are nice to him (McLouth)

Re: Perotto to become editor in chief at Baseball Prospectus
I just found out that Dejan IS taking over for Perotto in doing the Pirates Top 10 prospect list for Baseball America.
HOPEFULLY, Dejan recognizes that he lacks too much knowledge in this department and does what he's really good at and asks someone inside of the organization for their Top 10

I don't have a huge problem with Dejan doing it. In general I like his coverage a lot, but I will agree with some of your opinions. I think the thing is that he's more a writer who happens to cover a baseball team than a baseball guy. When you're a good enough writer you can get the job done covering just about anything, but there's a certain something that you kind of miss when he's not necessarily a seasoned baseball mind. I think he's put together a good enough group of connections that someone can keep him filled in on the players he needs to be covering, and it may help carry some of that over into his PG writing as well.

Is this temporary or for good?
Beginning Feb. 1, Chuck Finder will take over this beat, blog and everything else that comes with it. I will begin preparations for the Olympics in Vancouver, with opening ceremonies on Feb. 12. Basically, that means I cover the Pirates through the final day of PirateFest.“The key to a winning season is focusing on one opponent at a time. Winning one week at a time. Never look back and never look ahead.” Chuck Noll

Re: Perotto to become editor in chief at Baseball Prospectus
It's a temporary thing as the PG is sending Dejan to cover the Winter Olympics. Dejan is sticking around through the Caravan and Piratefest, then should be back for Spring Training. Finder's only filling in for what should be a pretty uneventful period, although it seems like something always goes down when Dejan takes a few days off.

Re: Perotto to become editor in chief at Baseball Prospectus
I'm finally back home and popped in to find out that you guys are stressing out about who is going to rate the Pirates top 10 prospects for BA. This has to be the stupidest conversation I have ever heard. Are you freaking kidding me!!! Anyone who follows the minors can make a top 10 list. Matter of fact anyone who has a vague idea of what is happening in the minors can make a top 10 list. You all are acting like rating the Pirate top 10 is rocket science. It’s just a subjective list from the person doing the rating….that’s all.
DK has stated he doesn’t have the time to follow the minors as closely as he would like because of his job with the Pirates but he has a base knowledge of all the prospects in the system and he definitely knows who the top guys are. He’d have to be completely stupid not to know who they are. He does however have an advantage that most people don’t and that is he can pick up the phone at any time and call KS and get an experts opinion on any player.
So I won’t worry DK will do just fine with this arduous task.

Re: Perotto to become editor in chief at Baseball Prospectus
That's what I'm thinking. Dejan will more than likely get his research and submission for the Top 10 from his connections within the organization... which could be a good thing.
I mean, me, you or anyone else are going to use our own projections and to be honest the Pirates Top 10 is very tight in talent and judgment after Alvarez.
At least someone was finally able to figure out what I had said about DK all along. Superior reporter and informative guy... not a baseball mind that I'd feel confident in presenting an evaluation on minor league talent or any talent to boot without some "help" from those with a baseball mind.
The good that could come from this is that this might st6art making Dejan develop more interest in the Minhor Leagues and that's good for us fans as he'd be more interested in feeding us more minor league info.

Re: Perotto to become editor in chief at Baseball Prospectus
Another semi-related note, it looks like PiratesReport.com hired some dude named Paul Ladewski from Chicago to write for the site, so I guess there was more to Perrotto's dismissal than just outsourcing their writing to the wire service. I haven't seen much of his writing, but I can already tell I dislike the guy based on his Wikipedia entry. The only section in it is "Hall of Fame Voting Controversy" as apparently he's one of those guys who turns in blank ballots because he won't vote for anyone from the "Steroid Era" and also a guy who won't vote for anyone on the first ballot. Basically everything I hate about Hall of Fame Voters.
