Themed avatars can be tiresome if they aren't interesting enough, I like the whole old school thing, I think it'd be hilarious to see avatars like that Danson one I made but with current Penguins rocking old school mustaches and hair (if I can find those images).

It's almost 5am...I can't sleep and I am bored, don't mind my suggestions if they suck ***, feel free to throw some out there (You too VA).

The Danson one is good for humor reasons.. I liked your work with the first couple, throwing on the filters to get more of a comic book affect with the Letang and Crosby ones personally

Yeah people have been abusing that filter like no tomorrow at this "other" forum run by ****** clown mods and admins. I still think Fugu is a twunt, I've been hating on her for a while now when she perma-banned me a year or so ago.

Anyways, avatar wise...I haven't even come up with anything for myself, hah. Been lazy.

I remember (I think) it was Ottawa running that filter for Playoff Avs a few years back. Actually it was more of a Sin City comic filtering over there.

Man, I don't remember her/that name at all. Shows how far removed I am from forum hopping like I once did

The place is a hell hole now. So you aren't missing much.

Yeah they had a sin city thing, but lately the last time I checked they had that effect in almost every other avatar. I have all of the filters that the company makes, there are other ways to make pics look good but they don't know. So they use and abuse that one filter, lol.

I liked the effect on the Sid & Tanger, doesn't look so swell with Kunitz.

Yeah the biggest pain in the *** with filters or doing a lot cooler avatars is that you often need the right pictures. Some are better with limited background noise and some need more of a face etc... Big places like over there you need a simple template or you do nothing but make avatars all day for the masses lol

I prefer being a mod and admin more than playing within others restrictions plus i like to swear a lot. You cant watch and root for sports as a man in a "family board" environment without ruining your fun

No kidding, I've watched hockey games with my nephew (11yrs old) and he's like "shot the ****ing puck!" and I'm like whoa kid, he's like sorry...then he's like it's hard not to swear and I was like he's right but as an uncle that has already corrupted the kid with perverted jokes, I need to at least draw the line there haha.

At that place, mods determine what is trolling, they don't bother asking you what you meant. You can't get a full jist of the context of a message unless you get it clarified.

Anyways, yeah their restrictions for avatars is lame, if you donate you get 150x150, otherwise you get 125x125 and that is kind of lame. You should keep it all 1 specific dimension not 2.

"trolling" over there is something that you can't really moderate IMO. A Board that has every NHL team represented and fans of any team can jump from board to board is going to invite a lot of back and forth between fans of each team. Even attempting to determine what is trolling, what is constructive criticism etc.. is way too much, too difficult. They really do place too much power in the hands of the Mods to determine things on their own. So much needs to be defined there as far as Rules are concerned. Hell, we have a small site here and I try to define everything as best as possible to eliminate questions and make my job easier

I forgot about the Avatar size thing. Isnt it set up that you have to accumulate so many posts before going from something like a 90x90 to a 125x125?

I don't understand the whole "family board" concept. Most places use it. I at least have it rigged here where you have both options. You can choose to have a censor filter on or off but by no means would I want to run a board that would be inviting to a bunch of tweens, elementary school kids and uptight folk. Anyone more than a Tween knows and uses profanity with regularity, just not around parents. You're not hiding anything at that point with censors

Yeah, I don't get that family board thing either, you just can't on a sports forum. It's sports, if players were to say "Screw you" to each other on the ice, fine, but they don't...they swear like sailors. I used to curse a lot when I played in freaking youth leagues, my mom would at first yell at me after games but then she's like whatever, it's normal, my dad didn't even care, haha...he was like "did that little ****er swear swing his stick at your leg? punch him in the head next time, I doubt that little **** does it again"...I was like 14.

Trolling is extremely hard to moderate, baiting isn't any easier. You just have to let that fly and when it gets out of hand, just close the thread. They will fine you with warning points and it adds up quickly, it's the most ridiculous system.

The system there was you needed to be there for 30-60 days before you got the option to use a custom avatar at 125x125, otherwise you had to use the ****ty ones they had by default. If you donated, you got a shiny gold star (LOL) by your user name and a 150x150 avatar size, mods and admins get that size by default because of their status.

This other board I was one, VA Yinzer was on it too, filled with a lot of immature **********s, but they had it right. Mods and Admins had the same username as you, you didn't know who a mod was unless you were around for a while and people just talked about it. I liked that one approach they had, hide in plain sight type of deal.

But every board does what they think works, their choice since it's their board right.

Trolling and instigating is pretty easy to define on smaller boards but cross team interaction is difficult because the smallest, dumbest thing could set off a fan of one team from another and then it's an all out flame war. Some people can bait with ease because those types of reactions can be easy to come by. A place like that really has to be hell to moderate but it's like most places... hand people the type of power they do over there and it gets to their head and suddenly they are ruling with too tight of an iron fist

30-60 days !!! thats right. I kept thinking that the post count thing had to be low because i remember graduating to a bigger avatar quickly.

Hiding their board status? I'm sure that probably worked at the beginning but after a while it becomes common knowledge who is in charge. Interesting concept though, I hadn't seen that attempted before.

Every board is created usually because someone doesn't like something about another board(s) or a board was shut down. To some extent you see a ton of similarities between all boards. I've personally belonged to so many boards in the past that I take what I don't like the most with them and didn't apply it and try not to. the different Pens boards are a pretty big influence there.

I've seen the "hide in plain sight" tactic used and I hadn't before and I actually preferred that more than the way HF did things, you know?

When you don't know someone who has authority over you is there, you let your guard down and act how you normally do, you want to see that so you know what type of person you are getting at your board. Another reason could be that, well...people won't directly ***** to you about someone or something, they'll have to report it and see who deals with it, that was always appealing to me when I was mod at places. Although me as a mod, I'm the least imposing person to be a mod, I just took care of the people that purposely and blatantly tried to troll. Most of the powers I used that came with being a mod was fixing threads, combining certain threads to make them look more active so people that stopped buy as visitors saw that and figured there is a ton of activity there etc.

You'd think it was just a lame internet geek gig to be a mod/admin, but at times it is stressful. Good thing people here don't let it get to their heads, the last 2 boards I was apart of, it definitely go to their heads. 1 board was created in spite of the bigger one and their mods abusing power, in the end they became the same thing but refuse to admit it. I hope this place never becomes like that.

I'm curious if you are open to any suggestions about things like the status, threads and actively viewing thing on the side, etc.

And like an idiot, I just found out you can collapse the twitter, active threads thing on the side, nice. Some very cool things on this board that I haven't seen done anywhere else, really like that.

About the trolling...I remember at HF going to an Oilers board to ask about an ex player (Rita) and getting 10 warning points for trolling because my location said "Vancouver" and the obvious rivalry between the two teams. But I'm not a Canucks fan, maybe I was a little back in the day but as a #2 team, but the fans ****ed me off to no end and they crushed that around a year or two after the lockout.

I was like ok...Rita was traded to the PENGUINS, I had a PENGUINS avatar, in my profile my team is THE PENGUINS and in my thread I asked about what we PENS FANS should expect from Rita.

LOL, so yeah...people are so sensitive about that.
