BA 2010 Draft Preview from Bucco Fans.com
Baseball America 2010 Draft Preview
by Tim Williams On 2/15/2010
Baseball America has released their pre-season college top 100 rankings, along with some other draft content to follow. That other content includes an article on why Bryce Harper is no lock to go number one in 2010, and the top 50 college draft prospects by class. They also have a top 32 rankings, which includes high school players. All four articles are subscription articles, and I highly recommend a subscription to Baseball America if you enjoy following the draft. Here are a few notes from the articles:
-I'm tracking Harper and Anthony Ranaudo already, although Ranaudo's season starts Friday. Harper was rated number one, while Ranaudo went number two. No change there from the rankings back in September. I'll be adding a Christian Colon tracker later today, and a Drew Pomeranz tracker later this week. Colon was rated #6, and Pomeranz was rated #4. Harper and Ranaudo are 1-2 respectively in the top 32. Pomeranz is 6th and Colon is 10th.
-Among the top 100, the following players have previously been drafted by the Pirates:
Matt den Dekker: Rated 95th, drafted by the Pirates in the 16th round, 475th overall, in 2009.
Cameron Rupp: Rated 34th, drafted by the Pirates in the 43rd round, 1273rd overall, in 2007.
NOTE: There is a Jordan Cooper listed at #83, but that is not the Jordan Cooper that the Pirates drafted last year in the 17th round. Coincidentally, it's the Jordan Cooper that the Red Sox drafted in the 17th round in 2008.
-Among the top 50 by class, the following players have previously been drafted by the Pirates:
Michael Heller: Rated 16th amongst freshman, drafted by the Pirates in the 29th round, 865th overall, in 2009.
Cameron Rupp: Rated 29th amongst juniors, drafted by the Pirates in the 43rd round, 1273rd overall, in 2007.
Matt den Dekker: Rated 4th amongst seniors, drafted by the Pirates in the 16th round, 475th overall, in 2009.
Tyler Cannon: Rated 7th amongst seniors, drafted by the Pirates in the 41st round, 1225th overall, in 2009.
Heller is the only one from that list who isn't eligible for the 2010 draft.

On their top 32 Harper is ranked #1, then the next position player is Christian Colon at #10. All pitchers in the 8 spots in between.
