Re: No rhyme or reason to NHL's 'discipline'
Good article as one could expect from Scott Burnside. He's right in that the NHL has no idea how to punish players consistently because there is no set of consistent guidelines to make decisions from.
This touches on my ***** about the "gray areas" in regards to certain penalties and putting too much " decision making" in the refs hands rather than cut and dry penalties. ... I really honestly think that the NHL has it set up this way on purpose or they'd have fixed this all by now. The NHL wants gray areas for whatever reason. Perhaps it's ego and personal power. I'm not really sure but they continue to create rules with gray areas that could be erased with ease if they wanted to. they have suspensions and such like was pointed out in this article that are nothing more than one persons "choice" and "personal opinion" which is nothing but a big gray area. It can be erased with ease... but the NHL isn't doing it. To do so would be to eliminate the leagues ability to dictate when they want and however they want. It's about power and ego.

Listen to this interview with Colin Campbell. The guy is a simpleton and with people like him in charge(he's the Director of Hockey Operations for the NHL & serves as the NHL's principal disciplinarian)the NHL will continue to be a garage league.

Eliminate the instigator penalty
The only player in the NHL more overpaid than MAF is Jordan Staal

I always wondered how that dimwit ever got the job he has, and the only thing I keep going back to is that he must be some long-lost relative of the old NHL president Clarence Campbell.
He seems to have, basically, NO qualifications for his present job, unless you include the fact he was a dman who took a lot of penalties when he was a player.

Downie fined, not suspended
By Pierre LeBrun
ESPN.com
The NHL has fined Steve Downie an undisclosed amount, but has chosen not to suspend the Tampa Bay Lightning winger for his incident with Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby on Sunday, a source told ESPN.com.
Downie received a two-minute penalty for roughing 40 seconds into Sunday's game after taking down Crosby in a play that saw both players' legs lock. The Penguins captain bent over backwards on his left leg and appeared hurt, but played the rest of the game.
Downie has been in trouble with the NHL before. In 2007, he was suspended 20 games for a check to the head of Ottawa's Dean McAmmond during a preseason game.

I have to wonder WTF Downie was trying to accomplish following Sid for that long after the play was over. It almost looks to be on purpose.
