NASCAR
Who watches it? More importantly, who likes it?
Just so this doesn't look like a trap, I'll state my intentions here. I would rather watch flies ****ing on some nature show than NASCAR. Besides the occasional car wreck and the last 3 minutes of the race, it's all cars going around in a circle. Toss in some pit stops for added drama and there you have it.
I just don't get it. Why is NASCAR so popular? Better question is - why is NASCAR so popular and the NHL is struggling?

Re: NASCAR
Personally, I do like it... Years ago, I couldn't care less, but then I moved to Daytona for a few years... After 3 years of going to both races each season, walking thru the pits during race week, getting into the technical aspect of it, and talking to some of the drivers, I realized I had became a fan... I've now been to probably a dozen or so races live (including the innaugural Brickyard as well as the race in Texas)...
Yes, it is a redneck sport... But it's also something that the majority of folks can relate to... A Chevy, or a Ford. Which is better? Who drives the best?... It's also a sport that doesn't take too much research to start following... Or how to pronounce (or even spell) someone on your "team"... Yea, it's redneck... It also can be alot of fun when you see it some way other than on tv...
If you've never been to a race, you gotta check it out live, because it makes all the difference (at least it did for me).
... But I grew-up a redneck from Greene County Pa, so I guess Beezy was right...

Re: NASCAR
I am a redneck too but I have shunned most of that **** for a long time. Tractor pulls or some **** **** it I'm there but those other things I mentioned naw. My wifes family is all about the NASCAR. Gotta sit there and watch that all day when a holiday and racing fall on the same day *groan* The ironic thing was the last game I was forced to watch actually had a good ending. The car that was owning the track all day got into a huge wreck on the last lap, **** the bed. But it isn't worth sitting there all day for that. I hear that all the time people say you gotta go to a race you will like it. **** that. For one I don't like crowded places with a lot of people, I don't like ****ty American big brewery beer, or rednecks or racing! So why the hell should I go again? ANOTHER LEFT TURN!!! Seriously after getting drunk on Miller Light I'd probably **** off everyone and get my *** kicked

Re: NASCAR
NASCAR is really quite alien to me. My wife's into MOPAR (her last project car was a '72 Roadrunner) and she extolled the virtues of the competition, but when I watched, the homogeny of cars following a Toyota was a little disturbing.
In the UK and Europe, Formula 1 is pretty big, featuring all sorts of track oddities (especially Monaco), so I was a bit lost at the thought of an oval track, which generated the phrase "as much use as GPS in NASCAR".
I did, however, think of a way to liven it up: Get a clapped out 1970 Chrysler Newport and send it in the opposite direction!"Horror has a face and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and mortal terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared."

Re: NASCAR
Try Driving 200 MPH for Hours with a Bunch of other Cars going the Same speed & then Add in High Temperatures, High Humidity & the Heat from the Cars engine on top of that, It is grueling, My Brother Ran stock cars races at Motordrome in Smithton & his Son & him both Drag raced a Keystone in New Alexandria !! They both said it was tough
But to each his own, Lot of people feel that way about the NHL !! some Of my Friends look at me like I have a 3rd Eye when I talk about it

Re: NASCAR
I understand that it probably takes some skill and endurance to drive a car at those speeds, but how much of the outcome of the race depends on skill or the car?

Re: NASCAR
IMO, it takes alot by both driver and pitt crew... If a whole pack comes into the pits at one time, it is the speed of the stop that determines who comes out in front, and the skill keeps them there... If the car isn't set-up correctly, it won't work as efficiently... Sorta like sailing with your jib half taught...

Re: NASCAR
I am a NASCAR Fan, not sure why though...maybe it fills my need for an event on Sunday after football ceases?
I started watching it when as a teenager I worked at Kentucky Fried and it was the only station we could pick up clearly on Sundays, and I just stuck with it.
Favorite driver: Bobby Labonte (the Pirates of Nascar, once proud champion who now toils for awful teams)
