Big Changes Ahead

by Beast | Feb 04, 2012 - 8:34 PM
The Pittsburgh Steelers, as you might be well aware, did not shine in the playoffs for the 2011-2012 NFL season. They lost a close one to a team that, in years past, they would have steamrolled over. During the season, they finished 21st in the NFL for points scored, and a better yet still not Super Bowl worthy 12th in total yardage. It is a Testament perhaps to the still-present atmosphere of defense = offense in Pittsburgh that they ended up with a 12-4 record playing in a close division (give or take the Cleveland Browns). And so the Pittsburgh Steelers must face the ages: Two extremely pass oriented offenses in the Super Bowl, and the stingiest defense of all time aging rapidly. Bruce Arians, a running man, was "not renewed for his contract", and it is likely that a pass-heavy play caller will be the next OC (At the moment, looking like former Cardinals OC and Chiefs HC Todd Haley). It means a period of growing pains in Pittsburgh. Ben Roethlisberger's already prominent role will be magnified. Of course, there are inherent problems a pass heavy offense must face:

Not Indianapolis

*Very little room for error. If Mike Wallace goes down to a serious injury mid-year, the effects could be devastating. You're looking at a major playbook reconfiguration and rarely does a SB team have to deal with that.
*Predictability. New Orleans, New England, New York Giants, Green Bay, Detroit, and San Francisco seemed to find a healthy balance, but Carolina, San Diego, and Atlanta failed. Plus, an aging O-line will find it hard to protect Ben while receivers get open (they already do).
*Adjustment. The Steelers' transition from their nitty gritty old school style of to a shiny West Coast unit will take time, and several drafts to stock the line and the receiving corps.
*More pressure to score. If the Steelers become devoted to offense, it's only natural that their defense should falter, so instead of Ben stepping up while the defense holds up the fort, the defense will have to step up while Ben holds down the fort. 30+ points from the opponents will become the norm.

So should Pittsburgh give up its defensive mantle? Or should it stick to the tried and true? Please tell me your thoughts.

Rantings and Ravings: Volume III: 2.03.12, Polluted Super Bowl Memories

The Rantings and Ravings of a Malcontented Loudmouth: Volume III: 2.03.12
The Polluted Super Bowl Memories Edition

At some point, this endeavor will consist of my actual reflections and how I dealt with the Steelers loss in Super Bowl XLV. However, this past Monday I had such a strange dream, that l I feel that I just can’t deny sharing it with my captive audience. Monday night, I dreamt I was at some random lake and at this lake I was swimming in a race. In this race I was competing against Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul of the New York Giants. Now everyone knows when a dream is concerned, you expect bizarre circumstances. This dream was certainly no exception to that rule, as JustinTuck and Jason Pierre-Paul were swimming while dressed in full NY Giants football uniforms: I, however, was adorned in a normal pair of swim trunks. I can’t recall the actual details of the race, but it seems that the race ended in a three way tie. At that point, the dream turns even stranger. The acting judge for the race was Angelina Jolie, but she was not Angelina Jolie, instead she was Angelina Jolie portraying her character, Evelyn Salt from the movie Salt (ED NOTE: The Movie Salt gets *1/2 out of ****). Judge Jolie... errr Evelyn Salt ruled that due to the circumstances of the finish, the race would be called a draw. The crowd (yes there was a crowd) booed upon hearing the results, and at this point Judge Salt began singing Yankee Doodle (HEY IT WAS A DREAM I CAN’T CONTROL THE SEQUENCE OR BiZZARE CIRMCUSTANCES OF EVENTS). Upon completion of her song, Evelyn Salt proceeded to guarantee a DOUBLE DIGIT win for the NY Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. Following that, I have no recollection of any other part of the dream.
(Ed note: I had viewed the movie Salt the previous evening and this could explain the possible appearance of Jolie in an innocuous dream. (Ed Sub NOTE: It was not the kind of dream that some of us used to have as teenagers, dreams where sheets needed to be changed the next morning…..))

*WAVING HAND* *SNAP*
“OH NO HE ISN’T TALKING ABOUT A WET DREAM INVOLVING ANGELINA JOLIE!”
(ED NOTE: If Angelina Jolie is reading this blog, Call me!)

So upon waking the next morning, I quickly began selling all my possessions to bet on the G-Men. I mean if Evelyn Salt (SPOILER ALERT) she of almost superhuman CIA powers,... [Read More]

Rantings and Ravings: Volume 2: I Come to Praise the Pro Bowl, Not to Bury It

The Rantings and Ravings of a Malcontented Loudmouth: Volume II:
The NFL Pro Bowl Edition

Before I type another word: I pause to wish all the fans of the Baltimore Ravens, “A BELATED MERRY KICKMISS!”

Quite surprisingly, after last weeks rant about the Mayans, I was shocked that I was not booted off this fine establishment. I was expecting a cease and desist letter all week, but unless it arrives today, I am safe. So for your reading "pleasure". I, a SELF PROFESSED, 1st Class IDIOT, will once again attempt to delve into football related information.

(ED NOTE: The moderators and operators of this site did specify that I have to, at the very least, use the terms, “FOOTBALL “ and “Pittsburgh Steelers” at least five times in my articles to retrain my author status! I feel that they fear that I may launch into a diatribe, that is less of a football commentary and more of what is in my desk drawers at any given moment.)

*SHAKING FIST ANGRILY AT THE MODERATORS* I hate you all so much!

Its Pro Bowl week! Yeah that fills most football fans with as much anticipation as the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes that also comes out this time of year. But this year, I am going to take a slightly less cynical look at the Pro Bowl and try to view it as I did when I was a 10 year old child.

Ok the Pro Bowl. I know I hear the collective groan! But hey, it’s still football, yeah it’s not good football and most of the players just want their free trip to Hawaii, nobody plays defense and the players don’t seem to care whether they win or lose. But what??? Am I going to dive into College Basketball…WHOOPEE, IONA is PLAYING SIENNA TONIGHT at 7 P.M. and can you believe it? Northern Tennessee A&T is matching up against Roast Beef State at 9 P.M! “WELL MY NEXT 4-5 HOURS IS BOOKED!

To quote the much maligned Colin Cowherd, “I’d sooner watch people talk about football than to actually watch Basketball.”

As bad as the above described college... [Read More]

NHL All-Star Game Snubbing James Neal Is Enough To Tell You The System Is Busted

by Kipper | Jan 24, 2012 - 11:04 PM
therealdealjamesneal.jpgAll-Star Games/Pro Bowls are generally a sham. They rely on voting public that generally votes based on recognizable names and then after that, the small percentage of the vote elsewhere doesn't help.

What makes it more of an issue, at least for me this year is that James Neal wasn't invited to the All-Star Game. Maybe he does after Alexander Ovechkin decided to be a cry baby and decline going after illegally hitting Zbynek Michalek.

James Neal should've been there without the need of injury.

26 goals (27th as I write this), That is 2nd most in the NHL, tied with Jonathan Toews, behind league leader Steven Stamkos who has 32. At 47 points, that is 3 more than Scott Hartnell who was given an all-Star spot ahead of James Neal as a replacement for Jonathan Towes.

Scott Hartnell?

Fartnell might be having the best season of his career so far but his best hasn't been better than James Neal's

Here's to James Neal You deserved to be at the All-Star Game and deserved to be more than an injury replacement if you make it to the All-Star as one.

The Mayan Calendar Meets the NFL Conference Championship week: A JUXAPOSITION OF DESTRUCTION

by bdeff | Jan 20, 2012 - 6:22 PM
The Rantings and Ravings of a Loud Mouthed Malcontent: Episode I:
The Mayan Calendar Meets the NFL Conference Championship week: A JUXAPOSITION OF DESTRUCTION For some unknown reasons, the moderators at this fine establishment decided to give me, a self professed, 1st class idiot, a forum to delve into “Steeler Related Football Topics". I can hear the discussion now, “We gave who??? What??? and how much did we have to drink??? So before they come to their senses and take away my author status, let me delve into my 1st foray into the lighter side of sports/Steelers related topics. Unlike many more knowledgeable fans, I don't proclaim to use stats, facts or reasoned arguments. To make a reasonably literate, semi-entertaining article, I will attempt to make use of every one of the 83 IQ points that I was blessed with at birth.

My friends, today I begin with a subject that without a doubt is as light-hearted as it gets. Today’s topic is: The predicted Mayan Armageddon of 2012, and how it will affect fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. We all know that In the past several years, the issue of the Mayan Calendar has been written about, publicized and even brought to life by Hollywood in cinematic form as the Movie: 2012 (ed. Note if you endured the movie 2012, I argue that you have already suffered through a personal Armageddon of sorts).

But to recap, on December 21, 2012, the Mayan long count calendar just abruptly ends. To some people, the ending of the calendar is theorized to represent the end of time! Pretty heavy stuff huh? At the very least, it certainly makes the Steelers search for a decent Offensive Guard seem slightly less significant? (ed. Note: Why do I have images of Chris Kemoeatu still getting flagged for stupid penalties in eternity? Ah but I digress…)

Unlike much more intelligent people, I choose to face this possible Armageddon as a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and not from a philosophical, religious, or political perspective, and certainly not by hoarding Ramen Noodles and cigarettes. So, IF the world is ending, it will dramatically effect who I am... [Read More]
